Explanation

An elephant fight is very fierce; standing near, one is trampled and killed. But standing on top of a hill one can watch the fight without fear. In the same way, one who enters an enterprise with wealth in hand, without fearing its dangers, can handle it from a safe position. That is the simile of the couplet.

'Thankaiththondru' is wealth in one's own hand. It need not be large; the idea is that at least some should be one's own. One who acts relying on others' wealth falls when their support goes. One with his own wealth to rely on stands firm even in unexpected troubles.

Commentators take the simile of watching the fight from the hill as safety in the midst of danger. The battle is going on, but the watcher is on the hill. The enterprise is risky, but the doer is protected by wealth.

It applies today too. One who starts a business or a new venture with his own savings can act with calm. One who plunges in sunk in debt trembles at every obstacle. So gathering wealth as preparation is wise. In ancient times the elephant fight was a spectacle that kings watched with pleasure, and those watching from a hill were safe. Valluvar has turned that practical experience into a simile. Wealth is the hill that sets us at a safe height, from which we can see life's struggles with calm of mind. At the same time we must sense danger and stay careful.

A story

Muthaiyan's Well

This is an imagined tale. In a year when the monsoon failed, in a village a farmer, Muthaiyan, decided to dig a new well on his land. Every year he had been saving a share of his income. Many of his friends had borrowed money to try to expand their yield.

That year rain was scanty. The farmers who had borrowed lived in fear. Unable to pay the interest, they came to the point of selling their land. But Muthaiyan began the work of digging the well from his savings.

Many obstacles came as he dug. Rocks were hit; water was slow to seep. Yet Muthaiyan stayed calm. Since he had his own money, he did not panic at the delay. He handled each challenge steadily.

When water seeped into the well, he cultivated his land. Even in that rainless year he got a good yield. He shared some water with his indebted friends. The villagers took note of his steadiness.

One day a village elder asked Muthaiyan, 'How were you so calm?' Muthaiyan said with a smile, 'Sir, one standing on a hilltop and watching the elephant fight has no fear. My savings were my hill.' He said it with the Kural in mind. In the end his well became a shelter for the whole village. His family's unity was part of his wealth too.
