Explanation

Our tradition divides the aims of life into three: dharma, artha and kama. The Tirukkural also follows this three-part division. This couplet says that one who has earned artha, wealth, among the three can easily gain the other two. 'Onporul' is bright wealth, pure and honest. One who has earned such wealth 'kaazhppa', that is, abundantly and firmly, is meant.

Wealth is needed to do dharma, and wealth is needed to enjoy pleasure. A poor man who wishes to do dharma cannot if he has nothing in hand. Likewise enjoying pleasure needs food, clothing, shelter and health. The heart of the couplet is that wealth stands as the basis of both.

Commentators take 'enporul' as easy to obtain, or as worth considering. In either case, dharma and pleasure come within easy reach of the person. The word 'orungu' shows that the two are gained together.

Thus it becomes clear that Valluvar sees wealth not as a separate aim but as the way to dharma and joy. The end of the chapter says wealth is the foundation of a good life. The practical wisdom of the Tamil tradition shows in joining the three ends. Wealth without dharma is destroyed; dharma without wealth becomes inactive; pleasure without both does not last. Valluvar asks to earn wealth first here because it is the foundation of the other two. Yet we must not forget the condition that it be honest, bright wealth. This is the full conclusion of the chapter.

A story

Marutta's Gold and the Ashvamedha

The Ashvamedhika Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Marutta's gold hoard. After the Kurukshetra war, Yudhishthira wished to perform the Ashvamedha sacrifice. The treasury had been greatly depleted by the war. He asked Vyasa for advice.

Vyasa said, 'In the Himalayan region, during the sacrifice of the former king Marutta, a great quantity of golden vessels and ornaments were left behind. Bring that and perform your sacrifice.' Marutta was a king renowned for dharma; the Mahabharata says that the gods themselves took part in his sacrifice.

Yudhishthira went to the Himalayas with an army, soldiers and carts. After worshipping Mahadeva, he took the treasure. He loaded the gold on thousands of carts and elephants and brought it to Hastinapura.

With that wealth he performed the Ashvamedha in grand style. Many gifts were given to brahmins. The people rejoiced. The grief and sense of guilt left by the war were somewhat eased. Dharma and joy bloomed together in the land.

This story illustrates the couplet 'for one who has gathered bright wealth, the other two ends are easily attained together'. As soon as the wealth came, Yudhishthira used it for dharma, for the sacrifice and for giving, and as a result the joy and peace of the people arose. It is not wealth alone but its good use that makes life prosperous.
