Explanation

The simile in this couplet is very beautiful. Love is the mother, and the child she bore is compassion. The nurse who rears the child is wealth. Even if a mother bears a child, without a nurse it is hard for the child to grow. In the same way love gives birth to compassion, but to carry out that compassion in action, to feed, help and protect, wealth is needed.

Here Valluvar does not take wealth as mere luxury. He takes it as a support that nurtures compassion. If one has a kind heart but nothing in hand, he cannot help. This couplet courteously states the practical truth that love alone is not enough.

The word 'nurse' does not mean one lower than the mother; she is also important for the child's growth. Likewise wealth is not lower than love. It is the support of compassion. But as the child belongs to the mother, so the rule of compassion belongs to love.

This couplet gives a high reason for earning wealth. If one wants the means to help others and show kindness, wealth is needed. Thus earning wealth also becomes a dharma. This is why in the chapter this couplet becomes the central one explaining the good use of wealth.

A story

Rantideva's Charity

The story of King Rantideva comes in the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata. He was a man of great wealth, but he gave away all his wealth to those in need. The Purana praises him as full of love and compassion. He used his wealth only for giving.

In time Rantideva lost all his wealth and went to the forest with his family. There he suffered hunger for forty-eight days without food or water. On the morning of the forty-ninth day a little ghee, pudding and water came. Just as they were about to eat, a brahmin came and asked for food. Rantideva gladly gave him a share.

When they began to eat what was left, a labourer came. 'The dogs that came with me are hungry too,' he said. Rantideva again gladly gave his food. Last, a man regarded as of lowest standing came asking for water. Rantideva gave him the only cup of water he had.

The words the Purana records Rantideva as saying are famous: 'I want neither kingdom, nor heaven, nor liberation. I wish to take on the sufferings of all beings so that their suffering may end.' Tradition says the gods, seeing his sacrifice, appeared before him.

In this story wealth was the nurse of compassion. While he had wealth he helped many; when wealth went, he gave even the last food in hand. The story beautifully shows the truth of the couplet 'compassion, the child of love, thrives through the nurse called wealth'.
