Meaning

She is the great beauty, consort of Shiva my father. Sindoor-red, she comes and cuts away all the chains of my attachments. She is Antari who stood upon the head of Mahisha, she is Neeli, the maiden who never fades. She holds Brahma's skull in her hand. Her flower-soft feet are always in my thoughts.

Explanation

The verse begins with 'Sundari', beauty, and at once moves to the battlefield: 'she cuts away the chain of attachments'. The Mother is not only beautiful; she has the strength to break the chains that bind her devotee. Tradition says Mahisha is not only a demon outside but also the ego and ignorance within.

The hand that holds Brahma's skull shows her power to humble even the pride of the creator. Yet Bhattar calls the feet of this mighty one 'flower feet'. Strength and gentleness are together in her.

Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), chapters 2 to 4

The Goddess Slays Mahishasura

From the Devi Mahatmya. Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, defeated the gods and seized Indra's throne. He held a boon that no man could kill him. The gods, driven out, took their grievance to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

From the anger of the three gods and from the bodies of all the gods, light poured out. The light joined together and took the form of a goddess. Each god gave her his own weapon. Riding a lion she went to battle. Mahisha changed again and again, from buffalo to lion, to elephant, to man, but she did not let him go. At last she set her foot on his head and defeated him.

The gods sang her praises. When Bhattar sings 'Antari, standing on the head of Mahisha', he means this victory.
