Explanation

'Muppurai' means she who fills everything that comes in threes: creation, preservation and dissolution; waking, dream and deep sleep; the three worlds. 'Manonmani' is she who raises the mind to its highest state. Among these great names Bhattar tells a story: she turned into nectar the poison Shiva drank.

The poison that could have destroyed the whole world stopped at Shiva's throat, which is why He is called Neelakanta, the blue-throated one. The verse ends firmly: 'Your feet are on my head.' If the feet of the one who turned poison into nectar rest on one's head, even the bitterness of life can become sweet.

Bhagavata Purana, the churning of the ocean

The Mother Who Stopped the Poison at His Throat

From the Bhagavata Purana. To obtain the nectar of immortality, the gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk, using Mount Mandara as the churning stick and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Before the nectar came, a terrible poison called Halahala surged up, and every living thing withered in its heat.

All ran to Shiva. To save the world, Shiva took the poison in His hand and drank it. Parvati, at His side, at once held His throat with her hand. The poison went no further. It stayed in His throat and shone there, blue.

Shiva's sacrifice and the Mother's love together saved the world. When Bhattar praises 'Ambika, who made nectar of the poison the Lord drank', he is praising that caring hand.
