Explanation

The kaappu verse is a prayer that stands guard over the whole book. Before he sings of the Mother, Bhattar calls on her son Ganesha, rather like asking a son's leave before speaking of his mother.

The words 'Uma, who is half of the Lord of Thillai' state an idea that runs through the whole book: the Goddess is never apart from Shiva; she is the left half of His body. And Bhattar asks for no wealth. He asks only that this Andhadhi should stay 'always within my mind'.

Sthala Purana of Thirukkadaiyur

The Ganesha Who Hid the Pot of Nectar

From the sthala purana of Thirukkadaiyur. When the ocean of milk was churned and the nectar of immortality came up, the gods carried it away in joy. But they forgot to worship Ganesha, who must be honoured before any undertaking.

When the gods set the pot of nectar down and went to bathe, Ganesha picked it up and hid it. The gods came back, found the pot gone and were dismayed. Once they understood their mistake and worshipped Ganesha, the nectar was returned. Where the pot had stood, a Shiva lingam appeared: this is Amritaghateswarar, the Lord of the Nectar Pot, of Thirukkadaiyur. That Ganesha is still worshipped there as Kallavarana Pillaiyar, the 'thief' Ganesha.

Abirami's shrine is in this same temple. So when Bhattar bows to Ganesha before singing of her, he is also following the story of the place itself.
