Meaning

Crossing the wasteland with one's life at stake is painful; the swagger of one who lives hand to mouth hauling nets, beyond all his means, is painful; living with base thoughts is painful to the soul; and desiring as a wife one who is still a child is painful too.

Explanation

Crossing the desert with one's life at stake is an obvious danger. A man who lives hand to mouth hauling nets yet swaggers beyond his station faces another kind of danger: it draws the ridicule of those around him and leads him into debt. Kapilar is not looking down on any trade here; he censures empty pride that outruns one's means.

The third line holds the verse's deepest point: living with base thoughts is painful 'to the soul'. The harm is not to the body but to life itself. The fourth line plainly condemns desiring as a wife a girl who is still a child. It is striking that a Tamil poet named this as a sorrow so many centuries ago.

Thought is the seed of action. The Bhagavatam tells how even one sunk in base ways was rescued by the name of God. Today what we watch, read and listen to shapes our thoughts, and keeping them clean is the way to protect the soul.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam

Ajamila

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. In the city of Kanyakubja lived a young man named Ajamila who studied the Veda, cared for his parents and lived a disciplined life. One day, gathering firewood in the forest, he came upon a dissolute man with a woman, and the sight planted base thoughts in his mind.

He did not drive those thoughts away; he nursed them. Little by little he abandoned his wife and his parents. Gambling, theft and deceit became his way of life, and so many years passed. He had ten children, and he named the youngest Narayana and loved him dearly.

In old age, lying on his deathbed, he saw the messengers of Yama approaching with their noose and trembled. In terror he cried out for the son who was playing nearby: "Narayana!" At the sound of that name the messengers of Vishnu appeared and stopped Yama's servants. "You cannot take one who has spoken the Lord's name, even unknowingly," they said.

Spared, Ajamila looked back over his whole life and wept. He went to Haridwar, lived in austerity and devotion, and reached the Lord. A single base thought had brought him down; the name of God raised him up.
