From the traditional life of Adi Shankara (Shankara Digvijaya)Adi Shankara and His Mother Aryamba
From the traditional life of Adi Shankara. Shankara was born at Kaladi in Kerala to Shivaguru and Aryamba. His father died when he was young, and his mother raised him alone. Having mastered the Vedas as a boy, Shankara longed to become a monk, but his mother, fearing she would be left alone, would not give her permission.
One day, as he bathed in the Purna river, a crocodile seized his leg. To his mother crying on the bank he called out, "Mother, if you allow me to take sannyasa, I feel this crocodile will let me go." In her anguish she agreed at once, and the crocodile released him.
Before he left, Shankara fell at her feet and promised: "Mother, at the end of your life I will be at your side the moment you think of me, and I will perform your last rites myself."
Years passed as Shankara travelled the land establishing Advaita. When he sensed his mother's end was near, he hurried back to Kaladi. He sat beside her, set the form of the Lord before her mind, and saw her off in peace. The villagers objected to a monk performing funeral rites and refused to help. Even then he did not break his word: he built the pyre himself in the courtyard of the house and performed her last rites.
That great soul renounced the whole world, but he never renounced the mother who bore him.
