Explanation

When a strong man fails to know his strength, or knows it and sits idle, it is a loss to him and to the world. The second line is its opposite: clashing chest to chest with a mighty man who has brave warriors at his side. In one, strength is wasted; in the other, strength is misjudged.

The third line is a journey through a wilderness hard to cross; the fourth, the company of people with barren hearts. That company is a desert too, without the water of affection or the shade of encouragement.

Hanuman had forgotten his own strength; when Jambavan reminded him, he leapt across the ocean. Many today lie stalled because they do not know or do not trust their own abilities. Seeking out companions who encourage us, and reminding others of their own strength, are the remedy for this sorrow.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda)

Jambavan Reminds Hanuman

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The vanara army searching the south for Sita reached the seashore. Sampati, king of the vultures, told them, "Sita is in Lanka beyond the sea. You must cross a hundred yojanas of water." The vanaras stared at the ocean in dismay.

Each said how far he could leap: one ten yojanas, another twenty, another fifty. Angada said, "I could get there, but I do not know whether I could return." Everyone lost heart. All this while Hanuman sat apart, silent.

The aged Jambavan went to him. "Hanuman, why are you silent? You are the son of the Wind god. As a child you leapt at the sun, thinking it was a fruit. There is no strength in this world to equal yours. Because of a sage's curse you have forgotten it, and you remember only when someone reminds you. Rise! Cross this sea in Rama's service!"

At those words Hanuman's body began to grow and his heart filled with resolve. He climbed to the top of Mount Mahendra, bowed to Rama, and in a single leap crossed the sea to Lanka.

It is a sorrow when a strong man's spirit lies slack; a good word that rouses it is a great gift.

To reflect on

What strength of yours have you forgotten or stopped trusting, and for whom could you be a Jambavan?
