From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva)The Desire of Yayati
From the Mahabharata. Yayati, son of Nahusha, ruled as an emperor. He married Devayani, daughter of Shukracharya, and later, without her knowledge, also married the asura princess Sharmishtha. When Shukracharya learned of it, he cursed Yayati in anger: "You shall grow old while still young." When Yayati pleaded, the sage relented: "If one of your sons will give you his youth and take your old age, you will be young again."
Old age, weakness and illness tormented Yayati. He asked each of his sons in turn. The elder sons refused. Only the youngest, Puru, said, "Father, your wish is my duty," and gave his youth, taking on his father's old age.
Young once more, Yayati enjoyed every pleasure for a thousand years, yet his desire was not quenched. At last he understood a great truth: "As fire blazes higher when ghee is poured on it, desire is never quenched by enjoyment. Even if one man had all the grain, gold and cattle in the world, it would not be enough for him."
Yayati returned Puru's youth, made him king, and went to the forest to do penance. From Puru's line, in time, came both the Kauravas and the Pandavas.
Yayati learned through his own life that a mind never content, however much it is given, is a sorrow.
