Meaning

Deceit from a beloved with curling, fragrant hair is painful; a ripe mango fallen and spoiled from a laden tree is painful; separation from one as lovely as a doll who was joined to you is painful; and when those who should understand fail to understand, that is painful too.

Explanation

This verse names four sorrows from the world of love. Deceit from a beloved strikes at trust itself. A ripe mango fallen from a laden tree and left to spoil is sweetness wasted, of use to no one.

The third line is the pain of separation: parting from a beloved with whom one was united is the grief sung throughout Sangam poetry. The fourth is the subtlest: when those who should understand fail to understand. It is the loneliness of not being recognised by the one we believed knew us best.

Nala and Damayanti passed through all four: separation, the failure to recognise, long waiting, and at last reunion. In our own relationships today, the remedy for these sorrows is to make time truly to understand those we love, and to guard their trust.

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva, the tale of Nala)

Nala and Damayanti

From the Mahabharata. Nala, king of Nishadha, and Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, fell in love without ever meeting, through the praise a golden swan carried between them. At her svayamvara, where even the gods came to seek her hand, Damayanti chose Nala, and for many years they lived happily.

Then the spirit Kali entered Nala. Playing dice with his brother Pushkara, Nala lost his whole kingdom. The two went into the forest with a single cloth between them, wasting with hunger. Under Kali's spell, Nala cut away half of the sleeping Damayanti's garment and left her alone in the forest. She woke and wept bitterly.

Bitten by the serpent Karkotaka, Nala was changed in form, and under the name Bahuka he served as charioteer to Rituparna, king of Ayodhya. Damayanti, back in her father's house, sent Brahmins far and wide to search for him. Word came that in Rituparna's court a charioteer had answered her question with tears.

Damayanti had a second svayamvara proclaimed. Bahuka drove Rituparna there in a single day, and she recognised him by the taste of his cooking and his skill with horses. Nala regained his true form; after their long separation the two were united, and Nala won back his kingdom.

It is a sorrow when those who should understand fail to understand; but true love sees through every disguise.
