Meaning

He is the divine guru who ruled me by showing me the good path, to leave this shed of a body reeking of flesh and to reach and abide in liberation; he is Kumaran, who melts for the beauty of young Valli of the hills. How did I come to have a head that does not bow at his lotus feet?

Explanation

The poet marvels at the pride that keeps him from bowing even to the one who came as guru and showed the way. Bowing the head is not only a bodily act; it is the sign of the ego subsiding.

From the Periya Puranam

Thilakavathiyar's brother

Marulneekkiyar embraced Jainism in his youth and became famous as Dharmasena. His elder sister Thilakavathiyar prayed ceaselessly to Shiva for him at Thiruvathigai. Dharmasena was struck by a terrible colic that no medicine could cure. At last he came to his sister and bowed his head. She gave him sacred ash, and when he sang 'Kootrayinavaaru' in the Thiruvathigai temple, the illness left him. He became Thirunavukkarasar.
