Meaning

When will you grant me the joy of wisdom which is you yourself? O Kanda with the spear, who came as a child, O Lord of Senthil! So that this strange, illusory sorrow of the mind, which soaks in women's pleasures, melts, drinks, swells and then wilts, may die!

Explanation

Worldly pleasure is a wave that rises and falls: melting, drinking, swelling, then wilting. The joy of wisdom is the joy 'that is you', the Lord himself; that alone endures.

From the Avvaiyar tradition

Roasted fruit or unroasted?

Tired from walking in the heat, Avvaiyar sat beneath a naval tree. A cowherd boy up in the tree asked, 'Grandmother, do you want roasted fruit or unroasted fruit?' Puzzled, she said, 'Roasted.' He shook the branch and the fruits fell into the dust. As she blew the dust off, the boy laughed, 'Grandmother, is the fruit hot?' In that moment she knew the boy was Murugan. A child's play humbled great learning.
