Explanation

In this verse Valluvar gives a definition of the word ilvaazhvaan, householder. One is not a householder merely by building a house, marrying and raising children; only he who lives by virtue is the true householder. The chief sign of that virtue is that he does not desire another man's wife. This is directly connected with the central idea of the section on domestic virtue: household life is not only managing one's own family well but also protecting the trust of other families.

For the phrase piraniyaalaL peNmai, commentators give several senses to peNmai: her beauty, her nature, her chastity. Nayavaadhavan means one who does not desire. That is, the true householder rejects it not only in act but in thought. It is worth noticing that Valluvar stresses purity of thought. Thought is born before action, and one who guards the thought will guard the act as well.

In our life the standing of a good family man does not arise from earning money or building a house. It arises from being faithful to his own family and respectful toward the families of others. The real measure is whether his neighbours can live without fear because of him and whether women feel safe in his presence. A man may be wealthy, learned and generous, but if neighbours are cautious in his presence, he has not earned the title Valluvar offers here.

A story

Rama and Shurpanakha

This scene comes from the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. At Panchavati in Dandakaranya, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived in a hut. One day Ravana's sister Shurpanakha came that way. Seeing Rama seated at the hut's door she was smitten by his beauty and, taking the form of a lovely woman, approached him.

"Who are you? Why do you live here practising austerities? I am Shurpanakha, Ravana's sister. Marry me," she said. Rama answered with a smile: "I am already living with my wife. Here is Sita. For a woman to be a second wife is sorrow. My brother Lakshmana is alone; go to him."

There was no anger or contempt in Rama's words. He simply stood as a householder faithful to his wife. Shurpanakha went to Lakshmana. He said, "I am my brother's servant. If you marry me you will be a servant's wife. Go back to Rama." Some commentators take this as a kind of teasing, but it is notable that both spoke plainly of their own situation.

When Shurpanakha, in rage, tried to attack Sita, Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears and drove her away. She ran to Ravana and complained. That incident became the spur for Ravana's seizing of Sita.

Rama's vow of a single wife has been praised since Kamban's time as the ekapatni vrata. He remains the finest example of the householder who stands in the path of virtue.
