Explanation

This is a distinctive verse comparing receiving and giving. 'Nallaaru enum kolal theedhu' means even if it comes by a good path, receiving is bad. 'Melulagam illenum eedhale nandru' means even if giving yields no upper world, no heaven, giving alone is good. Here Valluvar refuses to tie the fruit of charity to the afterlife. Do not give because giving will earn heaven; give because giving is by its nature good.

The meaning of 'kolal theedhu' must also be seen subtly. It should not be taken as scorning those who live by begging. In truth, what the poor receive comes from their need. But if one who can live by his own strength makes receiving from others his way of life, that is a fall. Receiving may diminish a person's self-respect. The phrase 'even if by a good path' indicates this: even if it were the road to heaven, Valluvar's thought is that one should live without receiving.

The basic idea is that the purpose of giving is not heaven or fame. Some give only to gain merit or the world above. That is a trade like a loan. Valluvar says more: even if there is no heaven, there is a good in giving, the elevation of the soul.

The Gita's nishkama karma says the same. Action done without desire for fruit is highest. It says the same of charity: a gift given because it ought to be given, to one who does nothing in return, is sattvic.

When we give, we may examine our motive. Is it merit, fame or pure love? Love is highest.

A story

Karna's Last Gift

This is the story of Karna's last gift, told across generations in the folk tradition of the Mahabharata. In the Kurukshetra war Karna fell to Arjuna's arrow. On the battlefield, as blood flowed, his life was slowly leaving. The world knew him as a generous giver. He never told any petitioner "I have not".

As he lay dying, Krishna wished to test the firmness of his giving. He said to Arjuna, "See the strength of Karna's charity." Krishna and Arjuna came to Karna in the form of a poor brahmin. "Karna, I am poor; I have come asking for a gift," said Krishna.

Karna said with effort, "Sir, I have nothing to give now. My body is pierced with arrows. I am at the point of death." A golden tooth in his mouth showed. "My tooth is gold. Take it," he said.

Krishna in the form of the brahmin said, "How can I accept a blood-stained tooth? You must wash it with pure water and give it." Karna took a stone lying nearby and broke out his tooth. But that tooth too was blood-stained. There was no pure water there. Karna took his bow and shot an arrow into the ground to create a spring. He washed the tooth with that water and placed it in his hand.

Krishna revealed his true form. "Karna, the firmness of your charity is marvellous. What boon do you want?" he said. The tradition says Karna asked boons only for others, nothing for himself.

We must note that this tale is not in the original text of the Mahabharata; it comes from the folk tradition. Karna's gift at the final moment, expecting neither heaven nor fame, is the best witness to the verse: even if there be no world above, giving is good.
