Explanation

This verse contains a Puranic allusion and gives a striking witness. 'Aindhavithaan' is one who has quenched the desires of the five senses. To show how great his power is, Valluvar sets up the lord of the gods, Indra, as witness. 'Kari' means witness; the word can also mean an elephant, but witness is the fitting sense here.

Old commentators, Parimelazhagar among them, connect this to the story of Ahalya. Indra, who slipped in sensual desire, fell under the curse of the sage Gautama, the tradition says. The fall of the lord of heaven before a sage who had mastered the senses is the evidence of that sage's power. Others take the verse to allude to the tradition that when an ascetic gains power, Indra fears for his own position. Under both readings Indra remains the witness.

The key subtlety is that even someone in high office will fall if he does not guard his senses. Having power, wealth and authority is no help if one is a slave to the senses. A simple sage, with no more than discipline, gains the strength to warn even the chief of the gods.

Today the verse can serve as a warning for those in power. We see many stories of people who had position and fame and fell because they could not control their desires. The strength of one who has conquered the senses is not in rank but in self-restraint.

A story

Ahalya's Release from the Curse

From the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana. As Vishwamitra was taking Rama and Lakshmana to Mithila, they came on a deserted hermitage. "Whose is this?" Rama asked. Vishwamitra told its story.

It was the hermitage of the sage Gautama. He was eminent in austerity, a man who had conquered his senses and lived by the path of dharma. His wife was Ahalya. One day, when the sage was away, Indra, lord of the gods, came to the hermitage disguised as the sage. Gautama knew his deed by the power of his austerity. In anger he cursed Indra, and tradition says that Indra, for all his high rank, fell into great disgrace.

Gautama also pronounced a curse on Ahalya: she was to live in that hermitage on air alone, unseen by anyone, lying in ashes and performing austerity. He added that when Rama entered the hermitage, the curse would end.

When Rama and Lakshmana entered, Ahalya appeared with the glow of her austerity. She bowed to Rama. Gautama also returned, forgave her and accepted her, says the Ramayana.

The Ramayana tells this event with a blend of sternness and mercy. The wrongdoer is punished, yet at Rama's coming the curse is eased. It shows that dharma does not stop at punishing; it also wishes to set right. The sage's power of austerity is not only fearful but also the power that upholds justice.

In this story even the lord of the gods fell because he did not control his senses, while the sage's power remained secure in his austerity. Parimelazhagar took this very tale as the witness for the verse. It shows deeply the strength of mastery over the senses.
