Explanation

To the question of what greatness is, Valluvar gives a very simple yardstick: the great are those who have done what is hard to do. Birth, wealth and position are not the measure; action is. Someone born in a humble family who does a difficult deed is great, while one in high office who does not is small.

What counts as 'seyarkariya', hard to do? Traditional commentators mean austerity, victory over the senses and the giving up of attachment, since this chapter is about renunciants. But the words of the verse are general. Speaking truth at a hard moment, forbearing where anger rises, giving away what one has: these are all hard deeds. The basic idea is that what cannot be done easily is what counts.

The second half of the verse is the harder one: those who do not do it are small. It is not said to insult anyone. It shows why a person stays small. When one does not try a difficult deed, one shrinks within one's own limits. One who tries goes beyond them and grows.

The verse applies in our own day too. Many whom the world calls great are great only by fame, but it is simple, difficult deeds that make real greatness: a nurse staying awake beside a patient through the night, a teacher giving a share of his salary to a student, a person who admits a mistake.

A story

Dadhichi Who Gave Even His Bones

This tale is told in the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata. The asura Vritra defeated the gods and terrorised heaven. Tradition says he had a boon that no weapon could kill him. Indra and all the gods, defeated, appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu said, "On earth there is a sage named Dadhichi. By the strength of his austerity his bones are exceptionally strong. Only a weapon made from his bones can bring Vritra down."

The gods went to Dadhichi's hermitage. The sage welcomed them. Hesitating again and again, Indra told him the reason for their coming: "Sage, to protect the world we need your body." Dadhichi did not hesitate at all. "I am glad to give my body for the good of the world," he said. He showed no regret even when his very life was asked for.

It is said that by the discipline of yoga he held his breath within and gave up his life. The divine craftsman Vishwakarma fashioned from his spine the shining weapon called Vajra, and with it Indra defeated Vritra.

What Dadhichi did is something that almost no one can do. If giving wealth, land or books is hard, how much harder it is to give one's own body. His name is still remembered as the summit of sacrifice.

The greatness of Dadhichi's deed lies not only in the fact that he gave his bones but in the fact that he gave himself for the good of the world without doubt or hesitation. To give without even a trace of pride is the sign of a truly hard deed.

It is a high example of Valluvar's phrase, 'the great are those who do what is hard to do'. He sought no rank, wealth or fame; it was the grace to see the world survive that moved him.
