Explanation

This verse says that when those who stand atop the mountain of virtue become angry, it is hard for anyone to bear it. At first sight this seems paradoxical. Do the virtuous not avoid anger? But what is meant here is not ordinary temper; it is righteous anger that rises on seeing injustice. That anger has no selfishness in it, and so it is a pure fire.

The image 'kundreri nindraar', one who has climbed the hill and stands, is powerful. A person on a mountaintop looks down on everyone below, and his vision is clear. In the same way, one standing at the height of character sees plainly what is right and what is unjust. When his anger rises against injustice, its force is like a mountain rolling down, which is the depth of the verse.

Some commentators take it as a warning: do not behave so as to provoke the anger of the wise. Others take it as praise of the strength of the wise. The following verses support the second view, because they speak of the grace and love of the wise. It shows that they get angry not out of hatred but for the sake of dharma.

There is a meaning for our life as well. We do not fear the anger of someone who is always angry. But when a very calm person rarely becomes angry, we feel its weight immediately. Reducing anger is one strength; keeping it on the side of dharma is another.

A story

Durvasa and the Patience of Ambarisha

From the Bhagavata Purana. Ambarisha was a king of deep devotion to Vishnu. He had observed the Ekadashi fast for a whole year, and on Dwadashi he prepared to end the vow. At that moment the sage Durvasa, famous for his anger, arrived. The king bowed and invited him to dine. "I will bathe and come," said the sage and went away, but he was late in returning.

Since the Dwadashi period was about to end, Ambarisha asked the elders for advice. They said, "Without the sage's arrival one should not eat, but if you sip a mouthful of water, the fast is ended and yet it is not counted as eating." Ambarisha did so. When Durvasa returned, he knew it by his power and was seized by rage.

In his fury he plucked a lock from his matted hair and created a terrible force to destroy the king. Ambarisha stood without any fear. But Vishnu's discus, Sudarshana, destroyed that force and then began to chase Durvasa.

Durvasa ran through the three worlds. He sought protection from Brahma and from Shiva, but they could not save him. At last, when he came to Vishnu, the Lord said, "I am servant to my devotees. Go and surrender to Ambarisha himself." The sage returned and fell at his feet. Ambarisha humbly prayed to the discus, and it subsided.

The Bhagavata says that Durvasa, seeing the noble quality of Ambarisha, praised him wholeheartedly. He accepted that strength that comes through humility is greater than power that comes through anger. Ambarisha then fed him a full meal with a glad heart, and only after the sage was satisfied did he eat himself.

No one could bear the force of Durvasa's anger, yet it was Ambarisha's patience and devotion that calmed it. The tale teaches that the wrath of the great has rare power, but grace and patience stand higher still.

To reflect on

When you feel anger rising, is it for yourself or for a principle, and how can you tell the difference?
