Explanation

At the end of the chapter, Valluvar gives a beautiful definition of the word 'andhanar'. An andhanar is one of beautiful coolness, that is, a heart cooled by compassion. Those who live wearing 'sendhanmai', a gentle grace, towards all living beings are the andhanar, he says, and they are the virtuous. The very wording makes clear that the basis of the name here is not birth but character and conduct.

'Sendhanmai' carries a lovely sense of reddish coolness. As shade gives comfort where the sun scorches, the grace of the wise comforts those who suffer. They offer that coolness to all life. The depth of the word 'evvuyirkkum' is that they show compassion not only to humans but to animal, bird and worm, to any life at all.

Old commentators took 'andhanar' here to mean renunciants and those who are noble in wisdom. Since the whole chapter is about the greatness of the renounced, this fits. At the same time the verse shows a greatness that no birth can give and only conduct can earn. It is thus a door open to everyone.

For our own life it is a test question: to whom do we behave with a cool heart? Only to those who are useful to us, or also to those who cannot repay us? By Valluvar's reckoning, the farther the circle of compassion widens, the higher a person's greatness rises.

A story

Shibi Who Sat on the Scale for a Dove

From the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. King Shibi of Ushinara was famed for his virtue. Indra and Agni decided to test his fame. Indra took the form of a hawk and Agni of a dove. One day, as Shibi sat in his court, a dove fell trembling with fear into his lap. "King, save me!" it begged.

Right behind it came the hawk. "King, that dove is my food. Give it to me. If my hunger is not eased, I will die," it said. Shibi replied, "How can I abandon a life that has sought refuge with me? I will give you other food." The hawk said, "Then give me your own flesh, equal in weight to the dove."

Shibi did not hesitate. A scale was brought. He placed the dove on one pan, and on the other he cut flesh from his own thigh. Each time, the dove weighed more. Even when he had cut away his whole body the scale did not balance. At last Shibi himself climbed onto the pan and sat.

At that moment the hawk and the dove regained their true forms. Indra and Agni praised the king's compassion. Tradition says his body returned, brighter than before.

King Shibi did not think of his sacrifice as a source of glory for himself. After Indra and Agni appeared in their true forms, tradition says he asked for no boon but wished only that all beings live free from suffering. It is such a compassionate heart that raises a king to the level of a sage.

Shibi's compassion, which was willing to give his very life for one small dove, is the summit of 'living with a cool grace toward all life'. This story shows the quality of the andhanar that Valluvar describes.
