Explanation

The first verse of the chapter opens with a question: is there any gain greater than virtue? Before that, Valluvar names two fruits of virtue: 'sirappu' and wealth. For 'sirappu', commentators give different meanings, such as fame, excellence or liberation. Parimelazhagar takes it as liberation, while others see honour received in this very life. Either way, the point is that virtue gives both spiritual elevation and worldly prosperity.

The boldness of the verse deserves notice. Many fear that practising virtue will bring only hardship, and that honesty will leave one behind. Valluvar answers this fear directly: virtue brings wealth also. That is, virtue is not a path to poverty; in the long view it is a path to well-being.

The word 'eenum' means to give birth. As a mother bears a child, virtue gives birth to distinction and wealth. The image shows virtue not only as a cause but as a mother. When she grows strong, her children, the good things of life, come after.

In practice, customers return to the shop of an honest merchant. Patients queue at the door of a trustworthy doctor. For a short time the cheat may seem to be ahead, but over the long term the person of virtue endures. This is the truth from experience that the verse speaks.

A question arises: may virtue be done only for fame and wealth? Valluvar describes its fruits to encourage us and not to make them the purpose. Virtue done without expecting a return is best; but the belief that it will bear fruit is a support for one who has just begun to walk the path of dharma.

A story

The Akshaya Patra and Krishna's Blade of Greens

From the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Having lost their kingdom at dice, the Pandavas lived twelve years in the forest. Many brahmins followed them, and giving them food was a great worry for Yudhishthira. Since never sending away a visitor hungry was part of his dharma, he performed austerities to the Sun god, on the advice of the sage Dhaumya.

The Sun was pleased and gave him a copper vessel, the Akshaya Patra. He said that food would keep coming from it until Draupadi herself had eaten. From then on the vessel multiplied even simple forest food as if it were nectar. Draupadi would feed all who came and eat last of all.

One day, after Draupadi had eaten, the sage Durvasa came with ten thousand disciples, sent by Duryodhana's scheme. "We are going to bathe in the river; let a feast be ready," he said. The day's food was finished and the vessel was empty. Fearing Durvasa's curse, Draupadi remembered Krishna with a melting heart.

Krishna came at once. "I am hungry; give me something," he said. "The vessel is empty," she said sadly. "Let me see," he said, and taking the vessel he found a small piece of greens stuck to its rim. He put it in his mouth and said, "May the Soul of the universe be satisfied with this food."

At that very moment Durvasa and his disciples bathing in the river felt their stomachs full. Feeling they could eat no more, and fearing the king's displeasure, they went away without coming back, says tradition.

For the Pandavas who held to dharma, food did not fail even in the forest. Fame and prosperity returned to them in the end. What Valluvar says, that virtue gives birth to distinction and wealth, comes alive here.
