Explanation

This verse may be called the heart of the chapter. If asked to define virtue in a single sentence, Valluvar answers: to be without stain in the mind. 'Maasu' means dirt, fault, impurity. Envy, deceit, greed and hatred are the stains of the mind. A heart cleared of them will walk the path of virtue by itself, which is the basis of the verse.

There is boldness in the word 'anaiththaran', all of virtue is this. It does not mean that outward acts are unnecessary; it means that their root is purity of mind. A tree without a root bears no fruit. Any gift or worship done without purity of heart becomes mere appearance.

For the phrase 'aakula neera pira', commentators say 'the others are of the nature of noise'. 'Aakulam' means clamour. Grand festivals, showy rituals and publicised donations are only noise when purity of mind is absent. This is not to scorn ritual; it is a reminder that its life must be in the mind.

This verse is common to all faiths. Whichever mode of worship one follows, everyone agrees that if there is stain in the mind it is fruitless. That is why it stands as a fine example of the universality of the Kural.

A doubt may arise that the mind never becomes wholly pure. But Valluvar stresses effort, not perfection. To examine the mind each day, see where the dirt has settled and wipe it away is a habit. One who stays in that habit slowly reaches the fullness of virtue.

A story

The Pure Love of Kannappa Nayanar

From the Periya Puranam. In the forests of Kalahasti lived a young hunter named Thinnan. Hunting was his trade. One day, chasing a boar in the forest, he saw a Shiva linga on the Kalahasti hill. At once a deep love for that Lord arose in him.

Near the linga a brahmin named Sivagocariyar came to perform daily worship by the rules of the Agamas, with water and flowers. Thinnan knew no Agama or mantra. But thinking the Lord was alone in the forest, he grieved. He brought water in his mouth and bathed the linga, put on it a flower he had worn on his own head, and offered pieces of the meat he had hunted, tasting them first to find the sweetest.

The next day Sivagocariyar came and was disgusted by this improper worship. "What a sin!" he said, tears flowing. That night, tradition says, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and said, "He is a hunter and does not know the mantras. But I accept his love. Hide and watch what he does."

Sivagocariyar watched from hiding. That day blood began to flow from one eye of the linga. Thinnan was alarmed. He placed healing leaves, but the blood did not stop. At once he dug out one of his own eyes with an arrow and fixed it to the linga. The bleeding stopped. But the other eye of the linga began to bleed too.

Before gouging out his other eye, he thought he would need a mark to find the place, so he put his foot at the linga's eye and raised the arrow. Then the Lord thundered, "Stop, Kannappa! Stop, Kannappa!" His love made him the Nayanar Kannappar.

Kannappar knew no mantra or ritual. But his heart was full of flawless love, and that placed him at the peak of virtue, as the Purana tells us.
