Explanation

Commentators give different readings of the second half of this verse. For 'vaazhnaal vazhiyadaikkum kal', Parimelazhagar takes it as the stone that blocks the path of future births that follows one's lifetime; that is, virtue stops the cycle of being born again and again. Others take it as a wall that shuts the way to the sufferings of life. In either case the point is that good action is a protection.

The first half is a simple command: 'veezhnaal padaamai nandru aatrin'. 'Veezhnaal' means a day that is wasted or falls with no good done. The idea is to do at least some small good every day. It means not to let any day pass empty.

A lifetime is the sum of days. If a little good is added each day, it slowly becomes a mountain, as many drops make a flood. One who waits for a great good deed wastes many days; one who does small good deeds daily makes his whole life virtue.

The image of the stone is also worth thinking about. A stone that blocks a road is firm and unmoving. Good deeds likewise become a protection that time does not shake. On the road along which suffering comes, that stone stands and holds it back. Our good deeds become our shield and fortress.

In today's life this can be a daily habit. Before sleep, pause for a moment to think whom I helped today and to whom I spoke kindly; if nothing, give that priority tomorrow. This simple habit can change the quality of life.

A story

The Feeding Vow of Ilayankudi Mara Nayanar

From the Periya Puranam. In the village of Ilayankudi in the Kaveri country lived a farmer called Maranar. He was wealthy, and he never failed to welcome any devotee of Shiva who came and to feed and honour them. Giving food to the devotees each day was the vow of his life.

The Lord wished to show his devotion to the world. Slowly Maranar's wealth declined. The harvests shrank and debts grew. His land and house were mortgaged. But Maranar did not stop feeding the devotees. He continued by borrowing, even by begging from others.

One day a heavy rain fell. There was not a grain of rice in the house to cook. On that dark and rainy night Lord Shiva stood at his door in the form of a devotee. Maranar and his wife welcomed him as he waited hungry.

The wife said, "There is nothing in the house. What can we give the devotee on this night?" Maranar thought for a moment. "The seeds sown in the field this morning may have floated in this rain and lodged along the bund. I will go and see," he said. He went in the dark, drenched in the rain, and gathered the seed paddy.

They could grind the paddy, but there was no firewood to light the stove, because everything was wet. His wife fetched some greens. Maranar himself pulled apart the roof beams of the house and put them in the fire. In this way the meal was cooked.

When the meal was ready and they went to call him, the devotee had vanished. In the sky the Lord appeared with Uma and said, "Your firmness is worthy of praise," and gave them liberation, says tradition.

Maranar's life, with no day let fall without good, stood as the stone that blocked the road of rebirth for them.
