Explanation

To the question of what happiness is, Valluvar gives a clear definition here: that which comes through virtue. Other things may look like happiness but are in truth 'puraththa'. 'Puram' means outer side, that is, outside virtue. They are joys that stand on the surface without touching the heart.

The verse makes two charges. First, happiness without virtue is not true happiness. It tastes sweet for a moment, but guilt and fear come behind it. Second, it brings no renown. Wealth and pleasure that come by wrong ways are not worth praise from others. Even in the mind of the owner there is a flaw.

In the third section, the book of love, Valluvar speaks of the joy of love at length. There he does not deny pleasure. What he says here is that the search for pleasure should be joined to virtue. Pleasure is not the enemy of virtue; pleasure without virtue is the enemy.

The happiness that comes in a life of virtue is deep. Food bought from honestly earned wages, the contentment after helping another, and peaceful sleep with a clear mind are all happiness that comes through virtue. No one can take them away.

We see in daily life that behind happiness gained by wrong means worry always hides. The fear of being caught and the tension that others may find out turn that happiness bitter.

So the final message of the verse is that one who seeks pleasure must first grow virtue. That is the straight road to happiness.

A story

Bharata Who Worshipped the Sandals

From the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. When Dasharatha died, Bharata, who was in the land of Kekaya, returned to Ayodhya. When he learned that his mother Kaikeyi had sent Rama to the forest to win the kingdom for him, he was heartbroken. "What happiness can this kingdom give me? I do not want a throne without my brother," he said.

He sharply condemned his mother's act. When ministers and the family preceptor begged, "The kingdom is yours; accept it," he refused. He decided that his duty was to go with the armies and the people of Ayodhya to Chitrakuta and meet Rama.

When he saw Rama in the forest, Bharata fell at his feet and wept. "Brother, the kingdom is yours. Return to Ayodhya," he pleaded. But Rama reminded him of the dharma of keeping their father's word and said he would return only after fourteen years.

At last Bharata made one request: "At least give me your sandals." Rama gave his sandals. Bharata bore them on his head and returned to Ayodhya. At Nandigrama outside the city he wore matted hair and lived as an ascetic, set the sandals on the throne, and ruled in their name for fourteen years.

Bharata could have enjoyed kingdom and wealth, but he loved dharma. That is why poets sing that his heart was full of gladness in those fourteen years of ascetic life. He is the example of the happiness that comes through virtue.
