Explanation

This verse names the five sense pleasures in order: taste, sight, touch, sound and smell. The one praised here is not the person who merely feels and enjoys them, but one who knows their 'vagai', their kinds. To know the kinds is to understand each one's nature, limit and consequence. Knowing which will give delight and which will end in pain is what wisdom means here.

The phrase 'kattey ulagu' is understood in two ways. Parimelazhagar takes it as the world being within his control, that is, one who has conquered the senses makes the world his own. Others take it as the world being contained in his knowledge, that is, everything is clear to him. At the centre of both readings is the idea of knowing and conquering the senses.

There is a graceful paradox. One who drowns in the desires of the senses becomes the world's slave; one who understands them becomes the world's master. It is the same world and the same pleasures, yet depending on how they are handled, one person becomes a servant and another a ruler. The approach is not to hate the senses but to understand them.

In our life this applies to food, sound, sight and more. One who tastes food with awareness does not become food's slave; one who enjoys music receives its pleasure without dissolving in noise. Befriending the senses means knowing them and enjoying them in measure. That is the lesson of this verse.

A story

Hanuman's Clarity in Lanka

From the Sundara Kanda of the Ramayana. Hanuman crossed the sea to Lanka and went through the whole palace of Ravana in search of Sita. In every chamber gold and gems shone. Musical instruments lay about. The air was thick with perfume. Halls full of wine and food met his eyes.

Wives of the rakshasas lay asleep there, their garments in disarray. For a moment Hanuman, searching among them for Sita, was seized by doubt: "I have looked at so many women. Does this harm my dharma?" he asked himself. After thinking for a while, he examined his own mind.

He became clear: "It is the mind that decides whether an act is good or evil. My mind has not been troubled by desire in the least. I am looking for Sita, and nothing else is in my thought. One must look at women where one searches for women." Having examined the state of his senses and made sure they were in his control, he continued the search.

In that palace filled with every pleasure of smell, sound, taste and sight, Hanuman was drawn to none. That is why he was able to find Sita in the Ashoka grove, thin with sorrow. Only one who has mastered the senses can bring any difficult task of the world under his control.

That Hanuman examined his own mind that night is a fine trait. A mind that tests itself not only before an act but during it is strong. Many examine their conduct only after succeeding, while Hanuman did it midway. That is why his mission was fulfilled with purity.

The message of the story is that for one who knows and masters the senses, no palace is a trap. Hanuman's night in Lanka is a living witness to what Valluvar said, 'the world is in the grasp of one who knows the kinds of the five'.
