Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar offers a striking image. When a man of deceitful mind pretends to practise tapas, even if others believe him, the five elements that formed his body, earth, water, fire, air and space, laugh inwardly at his acting. They know him better than anyone; his truth is not hidden from them.

In our tradition the body is believed to be made of the five elements, and those elements are his witnesses. Having a witness within himself, he cannot deceive completely however well he acts. Commentators express the idea in different ways. Some say it is the elements of the body that laugh; others say his five senses despise him; some explain that his own conscience laughs at him. Taken any way, the thought is that a witness exists inside him.

'Nagum' here means a mocking laugh. If one shows himself as a renunciate while full of desire inside, his life itself becomes a contradiction, and a contradictory life gives no peace. Though he may win praise outside, a ceaseless prick of conscience and fear lives inside.

Even today we meet situations at home and at work where we say one thing and do another. At such moments we can hear that faint laugh of conscience. To feel that laugh and mend our conduct is the benefit of this couplet.

A story

Kalanemi and Hanuman

This episode is from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana. During the war in Lanka, Lakshmana fell unconscious from Indrajit's arrow. The physician Sushena said that the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas had to be brought, and that if it did not come before dawn Lakshmana would not survive. Hanuman set out to fetch it.

Learning of this, Ravana called his uncle, the rakshasa Kalanemi. 'Put on the garb of a sage and set up a hermitage in Hanuman's path. Delay him. If dawn comes, Lakshmana will not live,' he said. Kalanemi rebuked him: 'What you do is unrighteous. Rama is no ordinary man.' Yet, fearing the king's command, he went in disguise.

Seated in ascetic's garb on the Himalayan slope, Kalanemi saw Hanuman and called him. 'My son, you are tired; rest in my hermitage. Bathe in the pond there,' he said kindly. Hanuman, trusting and respecting the sage's appearance, went to bathe. In the pond lived a crocodile woman. When she tried to seize Hanuman, he defeated her, and she, freed from a curse, took a beautiful celestial form.

She told Hanuman the truth: 'Hero, that sage is not a true sage; he is the rakshasa Kalanemi. He has come in disguise only to delay you. Beware.' Hanuman returned and rebuked Kalanemi. Tradition says he said, 'I give you my teacher's fee,' and flung him up into the sky with his tail and destroyed him.

In the tale, though Kalanemi wore an ascetic's guise, his heart was full of deceit. His conscience had reproved him, yet he disguised himself against it. His costume deceived Hanuman for a moment, but the truth quickly came out, and the costume did not protect him.

It is a good witness for the couplet that the five elements of a deceitful man laugh within at his false conduct.
