Explanation

This couplet states in the form of a question the uselessness of an outward look. 'Vaanuyar thotram' is an appearance high enough to touch the sky, that is, a very grand look. It may be tall stature, a magnificent costume or a sign of high office. But 'thannenjam thaanari kuttrappadin': if a fault known to one's own heart rests on one, Valluvar asks, what will that appearance do?

There is a subtlety. To deceive the outer world is one thing; to deceive one's own heart is impossible. Our heart always knows our fault, so however lofty the costume in which one stands, the fault pricks his happiness from within. Commentators explain 'vaanuyar thotram' as an exalted ascetic's look; some say it refers to any kind of eminence, whether bodily height, wealth or power.

This brings out the power of conscience. More than the mask we show to others, it is our relationship with our own heart that decides our peace. If there is a fault in the heart, even a sky-high mansion is a prison; if the heart is pure, even a simple hut is a palace.

We strive for outer success. But what our heart says to us as we lay our head down at night is the true verdict. This couplet calls us to make that verdict a good one.

A story

The Trustee and the Temple Inscription

In a large temple town in the south lived a wealthy man named Venkatachalam, one of the temple trustees. At festivals the way he stood and presided drew the awe of onlookers: silk dhoti with golden border, rudraksha beads around his neck, a broad mark of sacred ash on his brow. The townspeople called him 'Dharma Prabhu'. For the temple consecration he announced a large donation, and an inscription in his name was set in stone.

But there was a prick in Venkatachalam's heart. He did not pay his workers a fair wage. He had seized the lands of many poor families who had borrowed from him, for interest due. His donation was only a tiny part of what he had earned. Every time the town praised him, he tossed sleepless at night.

One day the old temple priest Ramasamy said softly to him, 'Sir, the offering you give to God is visible to all eyes. But think what is visible to God's eyes.' He spoke no word of blame, yet that one sentence pierced Venkatachalam's heart.

That night he opened his account books and thought how many families' tears lay unwritten in them. On that midnight when his lofty appearance weighed upon him, no praise gave him comfort.

Next day he began returning the seized lands to those families and put his workers' wages right. His temple donation stayed at its old level, but now his mind was light. He announced to no one what he had done. The inscription still gleamed, but in his eyes it no longer seemed great.

The couplet 'what will a sky-high appearance do if one's heart knows its fault' became true in his life. Only after removing the fault from his heart could he stand calmly at the festival even in plain clothes.
