Explanation

The first half of this verse speaks of two kinds of knowing. One is 'olvadhu arithal', knowing what one can do. The other is 'arivadhu arithal', knowing what one still needs to learn. The first is the limit of our capacity; the second is the limit of our knowledge. One who knows both has a clear idea of where to try, what to learn and what to leave aside.

'Adhan kan thangi', staying within it, is an important phrase. It means to remain within the boundary of that knowledge. Many people know their limit and yet cross it out of desire or pride. To stay is a discipline, but not a way of lying dormant. One can stay inside the boundary and yet widen it slowly, which is gradual growth.

'Selvaarkku sellaadhadhu il' means that nothing stalls for such persons. This does not say that everything is easy for them; it says that the undertakings they choose lie within their capacity, so failure does not come. They do not leap into unknown fields, nor try to lift loads they cannot bear.

In present life, the field, study, profession and responsibility that a person chooses with knowledge of his own capacity lead him to lasting success. If someone has a voice that suits song, training it with practice is the best path. If he keeps attempting ragas unsuited to his voice, the voice may be ruined. So knowing one's ability and knowing what one needs to learn must go together.

A story

The Girl Who Knew Her Voice

In a temple town near Thanjavur lived a twelve-year-old girl named Meena. Her voice was soft and sweet. Everyone in the town loved her Thiruppavai at the Margazhi bhajan in the temple. Her teacher Srinivasa Iyengar taught her music in a weekly class.

One day she said to him, "Sir, I want to sing a grand ragam-thanam-pallavi at the music festival." The teacher smiled. "Meena, let us see what suits your voice naturally. First let us test it for some days."

He gave her two songs. One was a simple kriti in the raga Kalyani; the other was a difficult piece with a complex tala pattern in the sankirna gait. Meena sang Kalyani with ease. In the second, her voice wavered and her breath fell short. "Now do you see where you are strong and where you still have to learn?" he asked.

Meena thought for a while. "My voice suits tender, melting songs. For fast, intricate rhythms I need more practice," she said. The teacher was pleased. "That is olvadhu arithal and arivadhu arithal. For one who knows this, there is no obstacle in music."

After that Meena built her stage programmes around the melting songs that suited her voice. At the same time she set aside half an hour every day for rhythm practice. Eight months later, at the temple music festival, she sang an extended alapana in Kalyani. Many in the audience listened with tears in their eyes.

As the years passed, the boundary of her voice widened. The strength she had gained in rhythm made her able to sing even the pieces that were once hard. Because she knew her limit, stayed within it and then slowly widened it, Meena rose to become a fine singer.
