Explanation

In this verse Valluvar presents a tree-climber. A man has climbed up a tree to the very end of a branch. Climbing as far as that was within his capacity. There is no place left above. But if, in a desire to go still higher, he puts his foot further, the tip of the branch will snap and he will fall to his death. 'Adhu irandhu ookkin' means 'if he strives beyond that limit'.

This is a figure. In every field of life we have a summit. To reach it by effort is admirable. But to cross beyond it in an endless desire to rise still higher becomes dangerous. Valluvar does not despise effort. That the man climbed to the tip of the branch shows the height of his effort. But to shut one's eyes to the truth that there is no more room above is harmful.

The phrase 'uyirkku iruthi', the end of life, is severe. It is not mere failure but a loss that takes life. A person who falls from a tree does not easily rise. So the care spent in knowing a limit becomes the care of protecting life. However high one rises in work, in service or in relationships, lasting success lies in knowing where to stop and steady oneself.

We see this today in the stock market, in gambling and in competition for position. Some, standing at the summit of success, lose everything in the desire to climb one more step. Contentment is the peace one finds at the last tip of the branch, by recognising that it is the last.

A story

Trishanku's Desire for Heaven

A tale told in the Ramayana (Bala Kanda) and the Devi Bhagavata: In the Ikshvaku line there was a king named Trishanku. He was of good conduct and ruled his subjects with love. But a strange desire arose in his heart: "I must go to heaven in this very body." To go to heaven in a human body is against the order of nature.

He went to his family preceptor, the sage Vasishtha, and asked him to perform a sacrifice for it. Vasishtha refused: "This is against the natural order; I will not do it." Trishanku then went to Vasishtha's sons. Angry that he should disobey their father's word, they cursed him, tradition says, to take the form of an outcaste.

Though his body was changed, he did not give up his desire. Finally he approached the sage Vishwamitra. Moved with pity because Trishanku sought refuge, Vishwamitra performed a sacrifice by the power of his austerity to send him bodily to heaven. Trishanku rose. When he reached the gate of heaven, Indra stopped him and said, "You are cursed by your teacher; you have no right to come here," and flung him headlong downwards.

As he fell upside down, Trishanku cried, "Vishwamitra, save me!" By the power of his penance Vishwamitra held him in mid-sky. The frightened gods came and pleaded for peace. In the end, says the tale, Trishanku was left hanging in the sky as a star. From this comes the phrase 'Trishanku heaven' for a state of being neither here nor there.

Trishanku had reached the summit of a king's station, and, unable to stand there, tried to climb beyond it. By a desire that crossed the limit he was left suspended between. It is a Puranic witness that those who climb beyond the tip of the branch meet ruin.
