Explanation

The last verse of this chapter again speaks of expenditure. 'Oppuravu' is the virtue of helping the world, doing what is needed for others and the community. Valluvar has a separate chapter called Oppuravu Arithal and praises such help highly. But here he cautions: even oppuravu should be done knowing the extent of one's wealth.

'Ulavarai thookkaadha' means without weighing how much wealth one has. If oppuravu is done without such measure, then 'valavarai vallaik kedum': the wealth will quickly be ruined. The mind may be driven by great compassion to give away everything. But the very good intention prevents lasting good.

The previous verses spoke of measured giving, spending and living. Here Valluvar ends the chapter by showing that the same rule applies even to the lofty virtue of generosity. From this we see that knowing one's strength is not a separate private ethic but the base of all good qualities.

In society today, those who run charitable organisations find that if they take on work beyond their resources, in the end all the work is halted. An individual, in the heat of emotion, may help others and spoil his family's future. Measured help continues for a long time; help beyond measure ends quickly. The generous heart and the careful mind are not opponents; the second serves the first by making its kindness last.

A story

The Feeding Shed

In a small village near Kumbakonam lived a landowner named Velappan. His family had owned a hundred acres for generations. Velappan was naturally compassionate and would never say no to anyone who asked help. The villagers greatly respected him for it.

One year a famine struck the village. Velappan gave the entire yield of his land to the villagers free, setting up a feeding shed. Hundreds ate there every day. His wife said gently, "Let us keep a share for our own family; we need paddy for seed." Velappan said, "It is wrong for us to save in front of hungry people."

Six months passed. The village's hunger was relieved. But his granary stood empty. There was no paddy to sow in the next season. He bought seed paddy on credit. The following year the rains failed and the harvest was poor. The interest on the debt swelled. In a few years part of his land was sold to pay the debt.

At last, in a year when the villagers again suffered famine, Velappan could not give even a handful of rice. Grieved, he went to the temple and wept before his family deity.

The village's old teacher came to him. "No one blames your compassion, Velappa. But if there had been measure in your giving, you could be giving the village food even today for many years," he said. Velappan took the words to heart.

He ploughed the remaining land again and set aside only a third of the yield for the village shed. That level continued year after year, and his children carried it on. Generosity within measure lasted a long time, while the generosity without measure had reduced his wealth within the first year.
