Explanation

The chapter on knowing the time opens with a simple and beautiful image. Take the crow and the owl. The owl has the power of keen sight at night; its eyes are best in darkness. But by day, the brightness dims its vision. The crow sees clearly by day and poorly at night. So in the daytime the crow easily defeats the owl. The strength has not changed; only the hour has.

The message Valluvar draws is very clear. For those who wish to defeat a foe what is needed is not strength alone but the right time. A mighty man who attacks at the wrong hour may lose. A weaker man who waits for the hour that suits his strength may win. This is not an insult to the strong but a guide to using strength wisely.

There is another way of reading it. The image reminds us that those who are strong in one setting may lose strength in another. The high of today may be low tomorrow; however powerful the enemy may look today, a time will come when his power dims. The one who knows this and waits will win.

The idea fits every field of life. In business, to confront a rival when the market favours him is useless. A lawyer argues on the day when the right evidence is at hand. A speaker presents his idea when the people are in a listening mood. In just this way, any undertaking of ours succeeds only if it comes at the right time.

A story

The Crows and the Owls

From the Panchatantra (Kakolukiya): In a great banyan tree lived Meghavarna, king of the crows, with his subjects. In a hill cave nearby lived Arimardana, king of the owls, with his clan. Every night the powerful owls attacked the banyan and killed many crows. At night the crows cannot see, and they could not fight back.

Meghavarna called his five ministers to counsel. One said to fight; another said to make peace; another said to flee. The eldest minister Sthirajivi listened quietly and said, "These foes are strong at night; we can defeat them only in daytime. Before that we must know where they dwell. If you accept my plan, I will do it."

His plan was strange. The king should scold him harshly, pluck his feathers and throw him beneath the tree. Posing as the king's enemy driven away, he would go to the owls and ask for refuge. So it was done.

At night the owls came and saw him. Sthirajivi humbly said, "The king of the crows insulted me and drove me out. I wish to serve you." Arimardana accepted him. Sthirajivi stayed at the mouth of the owls' cave and lived with them for many months, watching their nature, their dwelling and their weaknesses.

One morning, while the owls slept inside the cave, Sthirajivi slipped out. He went to Meghavarna waiting in the banyan and said, "This is the time. By day the owls are blind." All the crows brought burning sticks and firewood, piled them at the cave mouth and lit them. The owls choked in the smoke and died.

In this story the owls did not realise that their strength belonged only to the night. The crows, aware of their weakness, waited for daylight. Those who act knowing the time can conquer even the stronger.

To reflect on

In a contest you are facing, are you waiting for the time that favours your strengths, or fighting at the hour that favours your rival's?
