Knowing the fitting Time

Kaalamaridhal

This chapter teaches one to judge the fitting time for an action, to wait patiently until it comes, and to act without missing it. Like the crow that conquers the owl by day, the right moment turns strength into success, says Valluvar.

Introduction

In the chapters on acting after thought and on knowing one's strength, Valluvar showed how to plan and how to measure one's power. In this chapter he speaks of the right moment for that same action. Even with strength and a plan, an action bears no fruit if the right time has not come. Looking at many who have succeeded in life, the common truth is less that they had greater strength than that they knew what to do at what moment. Kalamarithal, knowing the time, is not only looking at the clock; it is sensing the run of circumstances.

The first verse uses the crow and the owl as its image. The owl grows strong by night, the crow by day, and by day the crow defeats the owl. Through this simple picture Valluvar says that a king who wants to conquer his foe needs the proper hour. The second verse says that moving in step with the season is the rope that ties Fortune fast. The third and fourth say that when time is combined with fitting means and place, even difficult tasks and conquests of the whole world become possible.

The fifth verse speaks of patience: those who think of conquering the world wait for the moment without being shaken. The sixth uses the image of the ram stepping back and says that the stillness of the energetic is preparation for a blow. The seventh says the wise do not show anger on the spot but hold it within and watch for the time. The eighth says that when facing foes one should bow and carry them on one's shoulder, until the time of their fall comes. The ninth says that when a rare chance comes, one should attempt the rare deed without delay. The tenth says to be as still as the heron and strike as swiftly as it does when the moment arrives.

Two attitudes come together in this chapter: patience and swiftness. When the time has not come, patience; when it has come, speed. Both must be in the same person. Some are always in a hurry, some always wait. Both kinds fail. Those who wait patiently for the right time and act at once when it arrives are the ones who win.

In today's world, the day of an examination, the season to apply for work, the time to invest, and the moment to speak in a relationship are all fields for this wisdom. The chapter stays fresh because it values patience in a hurried age and boldness in an age of hesitation. Time cannot be conquered, but one can walk in step with it.

Chapter story

The Pandavas in Hiding

From the Mahabharata (Virata Parva): The Pandavas, defeated at the dice game, lived twelve years in the forest. After that they had to spend one more year in concealment. If anyone recognised them in that year, they would have to go back to the forest for another twelve years. The five brothers and Draupadi were people of great strength, but that year tested their patience more than their power.

They chose the city of Virata, king of Matsya. Beforehand they had examined which disguise would suit each. Yudhishthira joined the court as 'Kanka', a companion at dice and an adviser. Bhima became 'Vallabha', a cook and wrestler. Arjuna took the guise of 'Brihannala', teaching dance and music to the women of the inner palace. Nakula became 'Granthika', keeper of horses; Sahadeva became 'Tantripala', keeper of cattle. Draupadi was a maid of Queen Sudeshna, under the name 'Sairandhri'.

All of them hid the strength that belonged to them and waited for each day to pass. Bhima stayed quiet in the kitchen, not showing the might of his shoulders. Arjuna, peerless with the bow, lived concealing it, wearing bangles and ornaments. They behaved as though they were strangers to one another.

Dangers came in between. When Kichaka, Virata's commander, tried to dishonour Draupadi, Bhima could not help but show his strength. But following Draupadi's plan, he struck Kichaka down secretly at night in the dance hall. Before that Bhima held back his anger and waited for the right place and time.

When the twelfth month came, the Kauravas raided Virata's cattle. Only then did Arjuna come forth and defeat the Kauravas. Duryodhana argued, "These are the Pandavas; we have found them before the year ended, so they must go to the forest again for twelve years." But Bhishma worked out the count of time and ruled, "The year of concealment has been completed."

Once revealed, they told Virata plainly their true condition in his court. Virata was stunned and offered his daughter Uttara to Arjuna. Arjuna had her married to his son Abhimanyu. Thus the Pandavas also gained a strong ally in that kingdom, which later stood on their side in the war of Kurukshetra.

The Pandavas had waited an entire year to reveal their identity. They held their strength in check until the right time, and when it came they stepped out without hesitation. Their life is an example for the verse: those who act knowing the time are able to win the world.
