Explanation

In this verse Valluvar takes up the largest goal of all: even if one wishes to obtain 'gnalam', the whole world. The way lies in two parts: considering time and knowing place. When the two join, the wish to gain the world itself will be fulfilled. This is not a permit for greed; it is a faith that even great goals are achieved by proper method.

There is a subtlety in 'gnalam karudhinum'. Valluvar is no opponent of great dreams. He himself says elsewhere that all one thinks of should be of high things. But he makes clear the method for reaching the dream. Though the dream be great, if the method is wise, it will be fulfilled.

Time and place should be considered both separately and together. To act in the right place at the wrong time is of no use; to act at the right time in the wrong place is of no use either. The moment when both coincide comes rarely. One who recognises it and uses it accomplishes even the greatest of tasks.

In our world, new ventures succeed when started in a particular city at a particular season. A song's success depends on the time and the hall at which it appears. A leader's message changes a society when it is spoken where and when people's minds are ready. To know the opportunities where time and place meet is the way to reach great goals.

A story

Narasimha at Twilight

From the Bhagavata Purana: The asura king Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance to Brahma and won a boon. By it he could be killed neither inside a house nor outside, neither by day nor by night, neither by man nor by beast, neither by gods nor by asuras, neither by weapon nor by anything else, neither on earth nor in the sky. Thus he thought himself unslayable.

He conquered the world and subjugated the gods. He ordered people to worship him as God. But his son Prahlada was devoted to Vishnu. Though Hiranyakashipu punished his son in many ways, his firmness did not break. One day he asked angrily, "Where is your Vishnu? Is he in this pillar too?" Prahlada said, "He is everywhere, and in this pillar too."

In anger Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar with his mace. In that instant the pillar split and out of it came Narasimha, with a human body and a lion's head, roaring thunderously. The form was neither man nor beast. Its roar shook the directions. Hiranyakashipu fought with it. But the hour was twilight, neither day nor night. Narasimha dragged Hiranyakashipu to the threshold of the palace, sat there, and laid him on its lap.

The lap is neither earth nor sky. The threshold is neither inside nor outside. With its claws Narasimha tore open Hiranyakashipu. Claws are not weapons, and so no condition of the boon was broken. Thus time, place, form and instrument all fell within the limits of the boon, and the destruction of Hiranyakashipu was accomplished.

In this story time and place joined with extreme subtlety to open a way to defeat one considered unconquerable. Choosing twilight as the time and the threshold as the place brought the great asura down. It is a Puranic witness that by acting with regard to time and place one can overcome even a power that shook the world.
