Explanation

Anger is a natural human emotion. It is natural for anger to rise on seeing injustice. But whether to express it at once or hold it in is the choice of wisdom. 'Pollena' means instantly, abruptly. Valluvar says the bright-minded do not display anger immediately in that manner. 'Ulverppar' means they burn within, that is, they bear the anger by themselves.

This is not merely advice to suppress anger; it is a method of conserving it rather than wasting it. If anger is shown at once to the adversary, he is put on guard, and our energy is spent in the outburst. After the anger cools, there may be no way left to mend the matter. If it is held within and turned into action at the proper time, it becomes useful energy.

There is also a subtle ethical path here. Anger held back can, over time, be transformed into steady effort for justice, through lawful means, through gathering support, through proper punishment. A deed done in emotional heat will bring regret later; a deed done after reflection brings justice.

In our lives there are so many occasions that provoke anger: an insult in the office, a harsh word in the family, a provocative post online. The bright-minded who tell themselves, "Not now; at the right time," are the ones who succeed afterwards.

A story

Bhima's Long Waiting

From the Mahabharata (Sabha Parva): On that cruel day when the Pandavas stood in the assembly after losing at dice, Bhima's heart burned like fire as he saw the insult Duryodhana inflicted on Draupadi. He longed to rise in that very assembly and crush the Kauravas there. His shoulders hardened like iron. His hands trembled.

But he was bound by the word of his elder brother Yudhishthira. Since Yudhishthira had staked them all at the dice, they were slaves, and had no right to fight back. He also knew that showing his anger would add more humiliation to the defeat. Standing in rage, with his hands clenched, he even said to his brother, "These very hands should be burnt, for with them you took up the dice." Arjuna calmed him.

In the end Draupadi's honour was protected and the Pandavas were released. But the fire in Bhima's mind was not put out. In that assembly he took vows: "In the battlefield I will break Duryodhana's thigh. I will drink Duhshasana's blood." But he did not carry them out that day. For thirteen years he bore the anger in his breast and waited.

In exile and in the year of concealment he remembered the vow every day. While tending cattle, while working in the kitchen, his anger burned within him. But he turned it into no hasty deed. He built up his strength by training. He honoured his brother's word.

On the eighteenth day of the Kurukshetra war Bhima stood in a mace duel with Duryodhana. At Krishna's hint he fulfilled the vow he had taken thirteen years before. Had he hurried he might have lost to his enemy; because he waited and acted in the proper place, justice was done.

Bhima's life is a hard but clear example of how the bright-minded do not pour out anger at once but bear it within and act when the time is right.
