Explanation

This verse names three qualities that lead to ruin in a single breath. The first is not conducting oneself to suit the situation: 'amaindhaangu ozhukaamai'. The second is not knowing one's measure. The third is admiring oneself, thinking too highly of oneself and boasting. The three are connected. One who admires himself forgets his measure; one who forgets his measure cannot behave fittingly.

Commentators give different explanations of 'amaindhaangu ozhukaamai'. Some say it means not behaving according to the position assigned to one. Others say it means not living in harmony with others. Both ideas point to the same: a person without the habit of respecting his own place and others' places.

Notice the warning in 'viraindhu kedum', ruin comes swiftly. The self-admirer may seem to rise in grandeur, but his base is weak and the fall is fast. A tree that grows slowly stands for ages; a quickly grown bamboo snaps in the first storm.

In society today, those who praise themselves beyond measure attract attention for a while. But once the truth comes out they lose trust. People of humility and a sense of proportion grow more slowly, yet stand firm. The verse is less a prophecy of doom than a plain observation about how a swollen self-image makes a person deaf to every warning that might save him.

A story

Indra's Pride and Mount Govardhana

From the Bhagavata Purana: In the cowherd village it was a custom every year to hold a grand festival for Indra, the god of rain. They believed that only if they worshipped Indra would the rains come. The boy Krishna saw this and raised a question: "Our rain comes because of Mount Govardhana. This mountain gives us grass, cattle and water. If Indra is only doing his duty, why should we make offerings to him? Let us hold the festival for our own mountain."

The cowherds agreed with Krishna's word. All the food arranged for Indra was offered to Mount Govardhana. When Indra heard of it, great anger rose in him. "I am king of all the gods. Do the cowherds insult me on the word of a boy?" he thought. In the pride of imagining his power to be limitless, he sent the clouds of destruction called Samvartaka upon the village.

For seven days and nights, ceaseless heavy rain poured. Thunder, lightning and floods terrified the village. In fear the cowherds ran to Krishna. Smiling, Krishna lifted Mount Govardhana on the little finger of his left hand like an umbrella and called all the cowherds and cattle into its shade.

For seven days he held the mountain. However much Indra's clouds poured, not a drop touched the cowherds. Indra slowly began to realise what a great mistake it was to have set out without knowing his own measure. The rain ceased. His pride was shattered.

Indra came to Krishna, bowed his head and begged forgiveness. Kamadhenu too came and worshipped Krishna. Krishna forgave him magnanimously. The incident stands as a witness to how quickly the pride that admires itself and forgets its measure falls.
