Explanation

Charity is among the most honoured virtues of Tamil life. But this verse reminds us that even generosity has a measure. 'Aatrin alavarindhu eeka' means to know the extent of one's income and give within it. 'Adhu porul pottri vazhangum neri' follows: that is the way to guard wealth and give it. The balance is that while giving, one also preserves the wealth.

Two mistakes can occur in giving. One is not giving at all, which is miserliness. The other is giving beyond one's income, which burdens oneself and one's family. Valluvar rejects both and shows the middle path. Only one who gives within the limits of his income will have the capacity to give for a long time. One who has given away everything in a single day cannot give anything the next.

'Pottri vazhangum neri' is the discipline of protecting wealth while also distributing it. It is like a farmer who stores aside part of his harvest as seed. If he eats even the seed grain, there will be no harvest the next year. Likewise, only if the giver protects his basic wealth can he go on giving.

Today too it is a good practice for each family to set aside a portion of its income for charity. That amount should be something one can bear and give with a cheerful heart. The quiet of giving within measure is better than the praise won by giving on borrowed money.

A story

The Golu Gift

When Navaratri came, every house in a small town near Thanjavur set up a golu of dolls. The women of the street went from house to house to see the golu. It is the custom to give visitors betel leaves and nuts, turmeric and kumkum, and sometimes a small gift. In that town lived a housewife named Annammal. Her husband was a teacher, and the income was modest.

One year her neighbours gave silver kumkum boxes as gifts. The whole street talked of it. The woman next door told Annammal, "You too must give something special this year." She did not have the money for a silver box and wondered whether she should borrow.

That night she told her mother-in-law. The elderly woman smiled gently. "Annam, giving is to show the love in your mind. Who said that silver means a lofty heart? Give what you can within your income. If you give with joy, even a clay box is equal to silver."

Annammal thought. Next day she went to the market and bought little clay kumkum boxes painted beautifully, along with turmeric, flowers and coconuts. For every woman she strung a small garland with her own hands. The expense stayed within her income.

When the women who came to see the golu saw the clay box, their expectations first dropped. But as Annammal spoke to each one, asked after her children and applied kumkum with her own hand, their faces brightened. An old woman said, "I saw the silver box. But the clay box you gave today stays in my heart."

In the following year and the year after, Annammal was able to give at the same level. The neighbour who gave silver boxes was crushed by debt the next year and set up no golu. The one who gave within her means was able to go on giving for a long time.
