Explanation

Here Valluvar speaks from the angle of how a minister should be chosen. 'Therchchith thunai' is a companion chosen after examination. A king should not make anyone a minister; he must examine three qualities. First, knowing dharma. Second, 'aandramaindha sol', words that are full and measured. Third, knowing the apt means for the occasion.

'Aandramaindha sol' is a phrase to note. The minister's speech should be complete: neither deficient nor excessive. It is speech arising from full learning. It comes not only with power but with restraint. Such speech tells the truth without wounding the king's mind.

Some commentators see this verse as advice to the king, others as advice to the minister to develop himself. Both views fit. The minister must develop himself with such qualities; the king must choose only such a one.

The word 'enjnaandrum' is also important. One who speaks with wisdom one day and wavers the next is not reliable. One should take as companion only one who always stands on the path of dharma.

In our lives too it matters whom we choose as adviser. Not the one who speaks sweetly to please, but the one who knows dharma, speaks measured words and knows the way.

A story

Vasishtha's Counsel

The Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana narrates an important event. Sage Vishvamitra asked Dasharatha to send Rama with him to protect his sacrifice. The rakshasas Maricha and Subahu were obstructing the sacrifice. Dasharatha was shocked. 'Rama is still a boy, less than twelve years old. I will not send him to fight rakshasas. I myself will come with the army,' he said. Through love for his son he was bewildered.

Vishvamitra grew angry. The text says that his anger brought the earth itself to trembling. At this moment the family preceptor Vasishtha, who was in the court, came forward. He spoke calmly and with measure. He did not answer anger with anger, nor rebuke Dasharatha.

First Vasishtha reminded him of dharma: 'Dasharatha, you are of the Ikshvaku line, upholder of righteousness. To give your word and then withdraw is a blemish to your clan.' Then he explained Vishvamitra's power: 'He knows all the astras. Sending Rama with him as protector will bring him no harm. On the contrary, this journey will give him rare weapons.'

His words were full and measured: they touched dharma, benefit and practicality. Spoken knowing the occasion, they dispelled Dasharatha's confusion. He agreed to send Rama and Lakshmana with Vishvamitra.

That decision changed the very beginning of Rama's life. The slaying of Tataka, the release of Ahalya from her curse and Sita's swayamvara all began from there. Vasishtha, who said the right word at the right time, was the cause. He is the form of 'aranarindhu aandramaindha sollaan thiranarindhaan'.
