Explanation

This verse points to the minister's hardest duty: to state the true good even to an unwise king. 'Arikondru ariyaan' indicates a king without learning, or one who has forgotten what he learnt, with clouded discernment. He may not listen; if he listens he may not understand; he may even grow angry. Yet 'uzhaiyirundhaan', the minister at his side, must do his duty.

The word 'kadan' deserves notice. It is not an optional act but a compulsory duty. The minister cannot stop his counsel depending on whether the king will accept it. Even if not accepted, by having spoken the minister has fulfilled his duty. Thereafter responsibility for the result lies with the king.

Some commentators say it refers only to pointing out the fault; others that it includes urging the beneficial act. Both fit. To show the way as well as the fault is complete counsel.

A subtlety: even for an unwise king one must not speak with contempt. 'Uruthi kooral' is to state the good respectfully. Clarity and humility bring more benefit than harshness.

In our life too we may have to counsel a manager, an elder or a friend who is about to make a wrong decision. This verse reminds us that the fear that they will not listen must not stop our duty.

A story

Vidura's Counsel to Dhritarashtra

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata contains the counsel collection called Vidura Niti. King Dhritarashtra was blind from birth and clouded in discernment by love for his son. His heart knew that his son Duryodhana was doing wrong, but he lacked the courage to oppose his son. His minister and brother Vidura knew dharma. At no time did he hesitate to tell the king the true good.

When in the dice hall the Pandavas lost everything, Vidura warned Duryodhana: 'This one will destroy the clan; give him up at once.' When Draupadi was dragged into the hall, Vidura stood and objected boldly. Though Dhritarashtra grew angry, Vidura did not change his view.

As war drew near, one night Dhritarashtra, sleepless, called Vidura. 'My mind is restless; tell me what is beneficial to me,' he said. Vidura spoke his maxims through the night. Some famous ones: 'Sacrifice one for the family; sacrifice the family for the village; sacrifice the village for the country.' 'Anger is a man's great enemy.' 'Give up falsehood; seek truth.'

The sorrow is that Dhritarashtra did not accept Vidura's counsel. Love for his son plunged him into confusion. Vidura did his duty; the king did not listen. In the end the war came and all hundred sons died. Even then Vidura felt no anger and consoled Dhritarashtra.

Vidura did not keep silent because the king did not listen. He is the full form of 'arikondru ariyaan eninum uruthi uzhaiyirundhaan kooral kadan'.
