Explanation

The two words that matter in this verse are face and heart. A smile on the face comes easily; it can be learnt and practised. Joy in the heart cannot be acted. If our heart blooms by itself when a friend arrives, that is friendship; if his success gives us joy, that is friendship; if his sorrow pains our heart, that is friendship. The measure of friendship is not a pleasing expression but the truth of the inner self.

The word 'agana' used by Valluvar is subtle. It means that the inner self should smile. Some people smile in office or in society for their own advantage; that smile is not friendship but a tool. Behind it there may be jealousy or contempt. So Valluvar warns us not to put full trust in a smiling face.

In today's world everyone smiles in photographs and videos. It is our responsibility to judge what lies behind. At the same time we should test ourselves: do we smile at our friends with the heart and not with the face alone?

This verse also lightens the burden of those who are shy or reserved. A person may not be demonstrative, yet a friend who feels deeply and acts faithfully is a better friend than a chatterer who flatters. What counts is the heart, and the heart shows itself in the long run through deeds.

A story

Duryodhana's Smile

The episode of the house of lac occurs in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Seeing the Pandavas grow in strength, Duryodhana grew fearful. Unable to oppose them openly, he got Dhritarashtra to invite them to a festival in the city of Varanavata. The invitation came with smiles and sweet words.

For their stay, Purochana, a man he trusted, built a beautiful mansion. It was made of lac, ghee and hemp, things that catch fire easily. Beautiful outside, it was a death-trap inside. The invitation showed that the smile on Duryodhana's face was not in his heart.

As they were leaving, Vidura is said to have warned Yudhishthira in a coded sentence: that fire destroys the forest but not the creature in the burrow, and that one who knows will escape. Yudhishthira understood. While living in the mansion the Pandavas, with the help of a miner sent by Vidura, dug a secret tunnel.

One night the house caught fire. The Pandavas and Kunti escaped through the tunnel. A treachery made of smiles had appeared as a friendship with a blooming face, but the heart had not bloomed.

The scene shows the warning in Valluvar's words. The sweetness of a face is not to be trusted by itself. More than a smile, we must trust the love that shows itself in deed.

Does your warmth towards others come from the heart, or only from habit and courtesy?
