Explanation

The final verse of this chapter warns about the purity of friendship. When friendship is measured and decorated with statements like 'he is thus to me and I am thus to him', and proclaimed before the world, it becomes 'pullenum', dull and empty, says Valluvar. 'Inaiyar' means 'such people'. The habit of praising friends aloud can become a way of displaying friendship.

Where friendship is true there is no need to advertise it. A fragrant flower need not speak of itself. A person who boasts to others, 'He is my dearest friend', 'He would do anything for me', often does not feel the depth of the bond. Some raise themselves by telling of a friend in a high post; that is not friendship but trade.

Today social media is full of posts celebrating friendship. They are not wrong, but we must realise that an announcement not backed by action is only decoration. True friendship is silent in sound but bright in deed.

Valluvar closes the chapter, then, on a note of restraint. After ten verses that praise friendship so highly, he reminds us not to turn its praise into a performance. The best proof of friendship, in his view, is the steady unspoken care with which friends treat one another when nobody is watching.

A story

Boasting in the Festival Crowd

The Panguni Uthiram festival was in progress. The temple trustee Subramaniam was a prominent man, and crowds always surrounded him. In that town a man named Kandasamy would always say loudly in company, "Do you know who I am? The trustee sir is my dearest friend. He will do anything for me. One word from me is enough."

The townspeople believed him. Some asked his help to get their work done. Kandasamy went to Subramaniam to keep his word. But the trustee said calmly, "Kandasamy, we have known each other since childhood. But it embarrasses me when you speak my name to everybody. This favour you ask is against the temple's rules."

Kandasamy felt ashamed. Meanwhile the old weaver Veluchamy, who lived near his house, never said a word about the trustee. But each year before the festival Veluchamy would go to the trustee's house and polish the old temple lamp. The trustee gave him coffee every evening. Neither of them ever spoke of friendship aloud.

Once the trustee fell ill. The first to stand at his door was Veluchamy. He fetched the medicine and sat beside him at night. When Kandasamy came to look, he understood that all he had said about his 'dearest friend' was only praise. That day he understood how deep unspoken love can be.

From then on Kandasamy began to help not with his mouth but with his hands.

To reflect on

Do you speak of your friendships more than you act on them?
