Explanation

Valluvar takes his comparison from the sky. On the first night the crescent moon is a faint line, and each night it grows until it becomes the full moon. The friendship of the good is like that. A bare acquaintance or a short talk grows with time into trust and understanding. The word 'niraineeravar' refers to those full of good character; because they are full themselves, their friendship moves towards fullness.

Against that, 'pinneera' describes something that is to decline afterwards. The alliance of fools may seem lively at the start, but selfishness, jealousy and suspicion creep in and it wanes like the dark fortnight. Many readers take 'pedhai' here not as one who lacks schooling but as one who cannot tell good from bad in conduct.

We can apply this to ordinary life. With some people, the more we mix, the more our thinking widens, our mind clears and our effort rises. With others, there is excitement at first, but weariness and guilt are what remain. The verse helps us to feel the difference and to choose, so that we keep company that makes us fuller and not smaller.

It also suggests a test we can use at any time: after spending a season with a companion, are we more or less than before? A friendship should leave us a little brighter every month, as the moon is brighter every night.

A story

Guha and Rama

In the Ramayana, especially in the Guha Padalam sung by Kamban, the scene at the bank of the Ganga moves the heart. Going into exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana had to cross the river. The lord of the far bank was the boatman-chief Guha. When he heard that Rama was coming, he ran with honey and fish and fell at his feet.

Guha was a hunter-chieftain. He felt small before the prince, but Rama embraced him warmly. "We were four brothers; with you we are now five," Rama is said to have told him. Guha wept. A heart that loved without regard for high and low amazed him.

He gave Rama food and arranged a place to rest. While Lakshmana kept awake through the night, Guha too stood on guard with his bow until dawn, because he could not bear that any harm should come to Rama. His concern showed his love.

Later, when Bharata came with an army, Guha was at first suspicious. Seeing Bharata's grief and love, he understood the truth and guided him as well. The friendship Rama gave him lit his heart for the rest of his life.

Here we see how friendship grows. It begins as a small affection at the first meeting, and every moment fills it with trust and humility. That waxing friendship remained alive after fourteen years, and, as the Ramayana lovingly shows, Rama did not forget Guha either.

To reflect on

Think of a friendship that has grown over the years. What small things helped it to wax like the moon?
