Explanation

This is the final verse of the chapter. 'Manaikkezheei' means intimate at home; 'mandril pazhippaar' means one who slanders in the public assembly, where many gather. Such persons come to our house, eat, learn our secrets, and then go out and speak of our faults before many. Valluvar says to avoid their company: 'enaiththum kurugudhal ombal', that is, not to approach them in any manner.

The danger of such persons is that they know the news within. They know our household affairs, family problems and weaknesses. They will not hesitate to publish these and degrade us. In a way their friendship is spying.

In today's life this occurs easily on social media. Publishing private conversations and speaking of friends' faults before many are of this kind. The verse asks us not to share inner matters with them and to keep away. It also teaches that we should not speak of our friends' household matters in public assemblies.

The two halves of the verse are really one lesson about the boundary between the private and the public. A house has a door, and what is said within it is entrusted to those within. To carry it out is a betrayal of the door, and Valluvar counts the betrayer as one with whom no closeness is safe.

A story

Shishupala at the Rajasuya

In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice at Indraprastha. Kings, sages and the noble came together from all over the land. The question arose of who should receive the first honour at the sacrifice. Bhishma said that the first honour should go to Krishna. Sahadeva supported it. The assembly quietly accepted.

But Shishupala, king of Chedi, rose. Shishupala was Krishna's cousin, the son of his father's sister. He had been a guest in Krishna's house many times and had eaten and enjoyed there. But before the assembly he began speaking of Krishna in abusive terms. "This man was a herdsman, a butter thief. First honour for him? There are kings here more distinguished than he," he said. He insulted Bhishma and the Pandavas too.

Krishna listened calmly. He had earlier given a promise to Shishupala's mother that he would forgive a hundred offences of her son. Shishupala went on speaking, and Krishna went on counting. When the hundred were over, tradition says Krishna hurled his discus and brought him down.

Here Shishupala was a relative who had enjoyed hospitality in Krishna's house, but he insulted him in the public assembly. He is the very man Valluvar speaks of as intimate at home and slanderer in the assembly. This very trait finally led to his destruction.

The Pandavas had faced shame in their own hall because of a man who slandered in public. The story shows the end of one who breaks the courtesy of friendship.
