Explanation

The words "thaayinum saalap parindhu", "with more tender care than a mother", are dear to Tamil devotees. In the Thiruvasagam, Manikkavasagar sang of the Lord as one who cares "even more than a mother who thinks of her child's hunger and feeds it milk". Kannadhasan sees the same love in the Sun. A mother embraces her own children; the Sun embraces "sakalarum", every living being.

The word "flourishing" calls to mind crops and trees. A leaf makes food only by receiving sunlight, and that food feeds people and animals alike. So every mouthful of food in the world is the Sun's gift. The Tamil farmer knows this. On the first day of Thai, when the harvest is in, he boils the new rice in a new pot until it overflows, and offers the first of it to the Sun. That is the festival of Pongal. For the farmer, rain and sunshine are the helping hand.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

The Akshaya Patra, the Sun's Gift

From the Mahabharata. When the Pandavas lost their kingdom at dice and set out for the forest, hundreds of Brahmins who loved Yudhishthira followed them. "Please go back," Yudhishthira pleaded. "In the forest I will have nothing to feed you." They would not go, and he was troubled that he could not feed those who had trusted him.

The family priest Dhaumya showed him the way. "It is the Sun who gives food to every living being. Worship him." He taught Yudhishthira the hundred and eight names of Surya. Yudhishthira stood in the Ganga, restrained his senses, steadied his breath, and worshipped the Sun with those names.

Lord Surya appeared in a blazing form and gave him a copper vessel. "For twelve years the food cooked in this will never run out. However many come, it will stay full until Draupadi has eaten." That was the Akshaya Patra, the vessel that never empties. In all their twelve years in the forest, the Pandavas never sent away a single guest hungry.

To reflect on

Before you eat today, pause for a moment to thank the Sun and the farmer who brought that food to your plate.
