Meaning

We shall say Vande Mataram and bow to the mother of our land. We do not look at caste or creed: whoever was born in this country is one, whether high-born or of another clan. Even the lowliest among us lives here beside us, so why should we wrong them as people of other lands do? If there are a thousand castes among us, what justice is there in letting an outsider walk in? Those born of one mother are brothers even when they quarrel. United we live; when unity goes, decline comes to everyone. Thirty crores of us will live, and if we fall the whole thirty crores fall. So let us throw off the old state of servitude and the ancient contempt, and honour the humble crafts as well.

Explanation

Bharathiyar took the Vande Mataram sung in Bengal and sang it in Tamil, but the whole song stands on Tamil soil. Its refusal to weigh caste and creed carries the first resolution of the freedom movement, and the lowly Paraiyar is named outright and placed beside the singer as a neighbour.

In the closing lines nationalism turns towards labour: the craft that was looked down on must be honoured, the old contempt cleared away, and the state of servitude thrown off at once. Thirty crores is not merely a number; it measures how one person's fall is everybody's fall.

To reflect on

In this song thirty crores is not a count but a measure of how one person's fall is everybody's fall. Have we grown the number, or have we grown the unity?
