Explanation

The Tamil word karam means both "hand" and "ray of light". In Sanskrit too the Sun is called Sahasrakirana, "the one with a thousand rays". Kannadhasan uses this double meaning beautifully: when the Sun stretches out his thousand rays, it is like a mother stretching out her arms to gather up her child. At sunrise the light does not stop to ask whether it is touching a poor man's thatched roof or a palace tower. A mother's love is the same.

In the first line the poet calls the Sun "thaaye", "O Mother"; in the second, "thandhaai", "O Father". A mother embraces and gives love; a father takes away darkness and fear and shows the way. The Sun is both. Driving away the darkness of night happens in the world outside, but as the Gayatri mantra prays, the devotee asks that the same light should also awaken our minds and remove the darkness of ignorance within. Every line ends with "potri", "praise to you". Just as a temple archana offers flowers with each of the Lord's names followed by "potri", the poet names each quality of the Sun and praises it.

Markandeya Purana

Martanda, the Son of Aditi

From the Markandeya Purana. Once the asuras defeated the devas and took away their worlds. Aditi, the mother of the devas, was full of sorrow. To save her children she worshipped Lord Surya with long and hard tapas.

Pleased, Surya appeared before her and promised, "I myself will be born as your son and destroy your children's enemies." A portion of his light entered Aditi's womb.

Even after she conceived, Aditi kept up her fasts. Her husband, the sage Kashyapa, grew angry and said, "Will you kill the child in your womb by starving like this?" Aditi answered, "It will not die. It is the one who will destroy the enemy," and she set the embryo before him in the form of an egg. From that egg a child came forth, so bright that no eye could bear it.

Because he was born from the egg that was thought to be dead (marta, anda), he was named Martanda. The asuras could not bear the heat of his gaze and fled, and the devas won back their worlds. Because he was born of a mother's tapas, devotees say there is a mother's love in the Sun's light.

To reflect on

Tomorrow at sunrise, step outside for one minute, feel the light on your face, and greet it with your whole heart: "Potri."
