Meaning

Muruga! Muruga! Muruga!

Come riding on the peacock, come with your shining spear! Give us well-being and worth and fame, give us tapas and skill, wealth and greatness. Many of your devotees here lie bound in suffering; free them and show grace. You who are the end of the endless Veda, you whose spear thinks only of the end of the asuras!

Come, meaning of the Vedas! Come, courage; come, fire! Those who brood and brood are drowning in a sea of worry, and your spear cuts that sea away. Grant that we too may live the life of Amaravati, the city of the gods; we take refuge, we take refuge. Kumara, spear of light that roars until every sickness is scattered, we take refuge!

In the temple that is knowledge, on the lap of the Mother who is grace, grow with your gleaming spear; give your devotees a new life upon this earth. O Guru! Son of Shiva! Fire that grows in the cave of the heart! Give us work and its fruit; Lord of the armies of the gods, we take refuge! We take refuge!

Explanation

This is a song of crying out. The refrain holds a single word, 'Muruga!', three times and nothing else: here calling his name is itself the worship.

The verses gather the traditional marks of Murugan: the peacock, the spear, the son of Shiva, the commander of the gods' army, the slayer of the asuras. But Bharathiyar goes further. 'End of the Veda' sees Murugan as the truth of Vedanta, and 'fire that grows in the cave' opens the inner sense of his name Guha: the flame of knowledge burning in the cave of the heart.

The boons asked for are worth noticing too: tapas and skill, work and its fruit. The devotee asks for success not only in the temple but in labour. Calling worry a sea and the spear the thing that cuts it away carries the faith that Murugan's vel destroys not only outer enemies but the fear inside us.

To reflect on

What 'spear' do you hold that can cut through your own sea of worry: faith, work, or understanding?
