Meaning

Those who think they can reach Shiva's world or Vaikuntha only after they die are deluded people; blow the conch here and proclaim that the shastra they speak is the babble of ghosts!

Those who seek to attain liberation on this very earth, on this very day, right now, and rejoice in the state of pure knowledge, are the pure ones; blow the conch and proclaim it!

Those who see false Maya as false, who cut away the pull of the senses and throw it outside, and who rejoice without doubt, are the noble ones; blow the conch and proclaim it!

Those who count women with kohl-lined, sword-like eyes, and gold, as mere earth and stay free of delusion, and who do the work that must be done without thinking that they are the doers, are the siddhas; blow the conch and proclaim it!

Explanation

In Hindu temples the conch is held to be the sound of Om. Panchajanya, the conch in Vishnu's hand, announces dharma. Bharathiyar asks for the conch to be blown to announce one message: liberation is not after death, but now.

This is the jivanmukti of Vedanta, freedom while still in the body. The Katha Upanishad (2.3.14) says: 'When all the desires that dwell in the heart fall away, the mortal becomes immortal and attains Brahman here.' Shiva's world and Vaikuntha are not belittled; what Bharathiyar condemns is pushing them into the future and forgetting the duty of the present.

'They do the work that must be done without themselves' means acting without the thought 'I am the doer'. The Gita (3.27) says: 'All actions are done by the gunas of nature; the one deluded by ego thinks he is the doer.' One who acts so is a true siddha of the Tamil siddha tradition.

To reflect on

What peace have you put off as 'something for later'? Could you seek it today?
