Explanation
'Aanmai' here is not about being male. It means the quality of one who rules himself: courage, effort and the firmness to do what one has said. In the chapter on perseverance Thiruvalluvar calls unceasing effort true manliness.
When Arjuna lost heart and laid down his bow, Krishna's first words were 'klaibyam ma sma gamah partha' (Gita 2.3): do not yield to this unmanliness, Partha; shake off this petty weakness of heart and rise. Bharathiyar says the same in one line.
Bharathiyar asked the same courage of women; his 'new woman' walks upright with a straight and fearless gaze.
