சூரிய வழிபாடு வேத காலம் முதல் உள்ளது. காயத்ரி மந்திரம் (ரிக்வேதம் 3.62.10) சவிதாவின் ஒளியைத் தியானித்து, அது எங்கள் அறிவைத் தூண்டட்டும் என்று வேண்டுகிறது. இராமன் இராவணனோடு போரிடும் முன் அகஸ்தியர் அவனுக்கு "ஆதித்ய ஹ்ருதயம்" உபதேசித்தார் (யுத்த காண்டம்).
இளங்கோ அடிகள் சிலப்பதிகாரத்தை "ஞாயிறு போற்றுதும் ஞாயிறு போற்றுதும்" என்று தொடங்குகிறார்; பாரதி அந்தச் சொல்லையே இங்கு எடுத்தாள்கிறார். பொங்கல் சூரியனுக்கு நன்றி சொல்லும் தமிழர் திருநாள். சூரிய நமஸ்காரம் உடலுக்கும் வலிமை தருகிறது.
Explanation
Sun worship goes back to the Vedas. The Gayatri mantra (Rig Veda 3.62.10) meditates on the light of Savitar and prays that it may inspire our minds. Before Rama fought Ravana, Agastya taught him the Aditya Hridayam (Yuddha Kanda).
Ilango Adigal opens the Silappathikaram with 'Njayiru potrudhum', we praise the sun, and Bharathiyar takes up those very words. Pongal is the Tamil festival of thanks to the sun, and Surya Namaskar gives strength to the body as well.
