Meaning

O Supreme Lord! O Hara, who lovingly accepted even my deceit along with your devotees of old! Do not forsake me, see! O you who set and wore on your head the bud-like crescent with its soft hare mark! O great Lord, who fights off birth, that serpent with gaping jaws, while my mind, of evil karma, hides in fear in its hollow!

Explanation

'Who accepted my deceit along with your devotees of old' is a startling truth: the Lord took in the poet's deceit just as he took in his true devotees. To accept the good is easy; to accept the flaws too is great love.

Indian tradition sees the mark on the moon as a hare. That Siva wears the marked crescent on his head is a sign that he raises up even those with flaws.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.

To reflect on

Whom have you accepted, flaws and all?
