Meaning

Women whose eyes are like sharp spears are a great fire, and I fall into it completely. Do not forsake me, see! Join me to your good servants, who worship your fragrant flower feet and walk on. Praise to you, my Lord! Do not let go of me, though I do wrong, O my Owner. I will sing of you.

Explanation

Here the poet makes a promise: 'I will sing of you.' In return for 'do not forsake me', a song is all he can give. Thiruvasagam in our hands is that promise kept.

'Join me to your good servants' is a plea for satsang, the company of the good. Saiva tradition and Vedanta agree that being among good people is half the journey.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
